WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, Game development firm McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds recently announced that game inventor and lifelong space enthusiast Donald McNeill has been added to the NASA DLN webcast on April 19, 2011 for the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Detailed shuttle mission coverage is available online on the NASA site at http://www.nasa.gov/offices/education/programs/national/dln/index.html.

Through distance learning technologies like videoconferencing and webcasting, the DLN connects students and teachers with NASA experts and education specialists. There are numerous modules in the Event Catalog for all grade levels featuring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and STEM content that highlights NASA research and missions like the Endeavor launch.

Endeavor's final launch, STS-134, coincides with the "launch" of McNeill's new NASA Space Terminology Deck, an add-on deck designed for use with the popular You’ve been Sentenced! word game. After brokering a Space Act Agreement with The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), McNeill's firm produced the new deck in conjunction with NASA’s Education Department. Together, the two chose words that reflected the rich history and future of NASA and space exploration.

During the webcast, McNeill will explain to the millions watching why he felt that encouraging children to learn more about space and space exploration was so important. As a child in the 1970's, McNeill grew up in El Lago Keys Estates Houston, Texas -- home to many of the pioneers of NASA's space program. In fact, the first man on the moon Neil Armstrong (Gemini 8, Apollo 11) lived just up the street, neighbor Ron Evans (Apollo 17) lived a block away, and Fred Haise (Apollo 13) was quite literally just next door.

In fact, the "space culture" of the era and friendship with these national heroes made a permanent impression on the entire McNeill family. McNeill’s older brother Kevin Lee McNeill, co-author of the NASA Space Terminology Deck, was also profoundly influenced during his youth by close contact with these NASA legends. He has spent the majority of his professional life with Lockheed Martin and was the Program Manager for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) which launched successfully in August 2005. These brothers share a lifelong passion for space exploration and are eager to share this enthusiasm with children and families nationwide.

"Playing You've been Sentenced! in conjunction with the NASA Space Terminology Deck is a fun and memorable way to deliver and understand these terms and data," says Kevin McNeill. "The NASA Space Terminology Deck also contains the names of past astronauts, missions and craft that will help teach the rich history of NASA to children in grades 5 – 9."

Creative Child Magazine Names Twisted Fish
Best Family Game of the Year

Wilmington, Delaware -- Creative Child Magazine recently named McNeill Designs’ original game “Twisted Fish” the Best Family Game of the Year for 2007. Creative Child Magazine is a bi-monthly publication that provides parents with the latest information on how to nurture their child's creativity.

As Best Family Game of the Year 2007, Twisted Fish was one of over 1,000 products reviewed by Creative Child Magazine’s play testers and a panel of judges including psychologists and educators.

The game, released in 2006, takes the old favorite “Go Fish” and casts it into the 21st century. “Twisted Fish offers guaranteed laugh-out-loud fun for the entire family and features outrageously humorous fishy characters, as well as tantalizingly unpredictable Zinger cards,” says company President Martin Uniacke.

Twisted Fish also showcases original illustrations by Hollywood special-effects artist Jody Fedele, providing a unique glimpse of what’s really going on under the sea. “The characters parody the good (and bad!) in human behavior,” explains Fedele, “and keep players laughing at their fishy antics.”

Game play also involves the use of “Zinger cards” which offer a unique opportunity for a complete reversal of fortune. “The inclusion of the Zingers means that game play is unpredictable and your luck can change at any moment,” says Uniacke. “Divine Intervention,” “Two-Fisted Fisherman,” and “Dead Scuba Diver” are just a few examples of hilarious Zinger cards that add an extra element of fun, suspense, and difficulty.

Founded in 2004, McNeill Designs’ 40+ person creative team produces games and toys of all kinds. “Although we’re officially a game and toy development company, internally, we prefer to call ourselves a think “tank” – pun intended” says company Chairman Donald McNeill.

In addition to Twisted Fish, the firm has also created the wildly popular sentence-forming game You’ve been Sentenced! the licensed Reader’s Digest Word Power Challenge game, based on the magazine’s popular Word Power page, as well as numerous specialty Add-On Decks for You’ve been Sentenced! each of which focus on a particular theme, such as Pop Culture, Sports and more.

You’ve been Sentenced! Wins 4th Major Award

Wilmington, Delaware -- Wilmington, Delaware -- McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds recently announced that their flagship game You’ve been Sentenced! was honored with a Dr. Toy Best Products Award. The Best Products Award was developed by noted developmental authority, Stevanne Auerbach, Ph.D. (a.k.a. Dr. Toy) as a service to consumers who desire to purchase safe, affordable, and stimulating toys and games. Dr. Toy’s Best Products award winning products were carefully chosen from among hundreds that she has reviewed at toy fairs, catalogs, and through many other sources, and by using extensive criteria she has developed over many years. Among the criteria used are: safety, age-appropriateness, design, durability, lasting play value, cultural and ethnic diversity, creativity, good value for price, and, naturally, fun.

McNeill’s winning entry, You’ve been Sentenced! is a language game where players use word cards to build sentences, challenging their ingenuity in a hilarious, competitive environment. In addition to the Dr. Toy best products – Spring 2007 Award, the game has gained industry-wide recognition with a prestigious Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal Award and an iParenting Media Award, a Spewgie award winner for Best Family Fun Game from Spewgilist.com., as well as an exciting win at the recent FAO Schwarz Toy Auditions, held at the FAO Schwarz flagship store in New York.

“You’ve Been Sentenced!” is the next great evolution in games.” states Paul Edward Cooper, Vice President of Game Development at McNeill Designs. “Using a hand of 10 pentagon shaped cards, each with 5 unique word conjugations, players build and defend seriously bizarre and hilarious sentences. “You’ve been Sentenced!” is the perfect bridging game for gamers and non-gamers. The rules and play are simple enough for your non-gamer friends and family, yet the game play is challenging and fun enough for those of us who consider ourselves true gamers.”

Upcoming new products by McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds include additional specialty You’ve been Sentenced! Add-On Decks, each of which focus on a particular theme. Pop Culture, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Sports, and a variety of other decks which are all slated for a Fall 2007 release.

Also slated for beta release at Gen Con ‘07 is an online version of You’ve been Sentenced! which will contain many of the same elements that made the card version so successful. “The online version has both the look and feel of the original, with similar graphics and colors,” says Don McNeill, Chairman. “Players can easily manipulate word cards on their screen to create sentences and play is timed. But best of all, players can instantly communicate with one another through a powerful chat function. This allows the online version of You’ve been Sentenced! to retain its most important elements – interaction between players, discussion of one another’s sentences, and the all-important voting segment.”

Reader’s Digest and McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds
Team Up, Create Word Power Challenge Game

Wilmington, Delaware -- TheReader’s Digest Association recently entered into a licensing agreement with the toy and game manufacturer McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds to create a new line of games and related merchandise based on the popular Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge.

The Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge is the nation’s premier middle school vocabulary competition and an educational outreach program of Reader’s Digest Association, Inc. The event invites students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and the Department of Defense Dependent Schools, as well as home-schooled students, to participate each year. More than two million middle school students and 7,000 schools will participate in this year’s Word Power Challenge, which awards $50,000 in college scholarships.

The first game, slated for stores in fall 2007, is the Reader’s Digest Word Power Challenge Game. Drawing from the perennially popular “Word Power” feature in Reader’s Digest magazine, this game provides a fun and entertaining way of gaining a more sophisticated working vocabulary. By utilizing facts from four categories; Word origin, Fill-in-the-blank, Definition and Synonyms, players gain an intensive knowledge of each word in the deck. Coupled with vibrant visual reminders, players develop an incredible arsenal of powerful words in a challenging way.

“This exciting game is a great way to sharpen players' vocabularies, boost their language skills, and foster a love of language,” says McNeill Designs President Martin Uniacke. “But most importantly, the game is truly fun to play. Kids of all ages -- and even adults --will find that they are laughing while learning.”

The Reader’s Digest Word Power Challenge Game will be available exclusively at over 600 Barnes & Noble retail locations throughout the 50 states and District of Columbia. For international customers, the products will be available on the Barnes & Noble website, the internet’s largest bookseller, at www.barnesandnoble.com.

“Linking McNeill Designs with a national icon like Reader’s Digest is an exciting opportunity for our firm,” explains company Chairman Donald McNeill. McNeill Designs Wins Prestigious Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal 2006

Wilmington, Delaware – Local toy and game design firm McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds recently announced that its original card game You’ve been Sentenced! was awarded a prestigious Toy Portfolio Gold Seal 2006.

The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio was founded in 1989 as the only independent consumer review of children's media such as toys and games, books, and videos. When reviewing new products, the organization adheres to stringent guidelines. Play testers must answer questions such as “What is this product designed to do and how well does it do it? What can the child do with the product? Does it invite active doing and thinking or simply passive watching?” Other criteria include crucial adherence to safety guidelines, excellence in concept and design, and age appropriateness.
According to the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio staff, education-related questions like “What will a child learn from this product? Is it a "smart" product that will engage the child's mind or simply a novelty with limited play value? Is it entertaining?” are all determining factors of a products success. No product makes the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio if kids find it boring, no matter how "good" or "educational" it claims to be.
“Recognition from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio is incredibly gratifying, especially because unlike other groups that rate products, Oppenheim does not charge entry fees or accept ads from manufacturers. When consumers see the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio award seals on products, they can be assured that they are "award-winning" because they were selected by a noted expert and further tested by the most objective panel of judges and kids,” explains McNeill Designs’ Chairman Donald McNeill.
In fact, to get a meaningful sampling, the Oppenehim organization works with families of testers from all walks of life. Reflecting the diversity in the makeup of America’s parents, Oppenheim employs parent testers who are also teachers, secretaries, lawyers, doctors, writers, engineers, doormen, software programmers, editors, psychologists, librarians, engineers, business people, architects, family therapists, musicians, artists, nurses, and early childhood educators. Since all new products tend to have novelty appeal, tester families are asked to live with a product for some time before assessing it. Oppenheim also tests products in preschools and after-school settings in order to get feedback directly from large groups of children.
Promising products are finally tested by experts as part of the overall evaluation of the product. Unlike publications that rely exclusively on the judgment of kid-testers, Oppenheim reviews take kid-tester's response to a product as one of the many factors to be considered. According to the Oppenheim guidelines, by not relying solely on kid-testers, play is more balanced.
Founded in 2004, McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds is a 30+ person creative team which produces games and toys of all kinds. The company’s award-winning games include: You’ve been Sentenced! a language game where players use word cards to build sentences, challenging their ingenuity in a hilarious, competitive environment, and Twisted Fish a challenging memory game which requires strategy, deception, and bluffing skills, plus an intact sense of humor.

Toy and Game Giant FAO Schwarz Hosts
“Meet the Inventor” Game Signing

Manhattan, New York – Toy and game inventor Donald McNeill will be on hand at FAO Schwarz on 5th Avenue Saturday, July 8 and Sunday, July 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to sign copies of his latest hit card game “You’ve been Sentenced!”

You’ve been Sentenced! is a language game that turns sentence construction into a hilarious competition. The game uses pentagon-shaped cards containing conjugations of common words, familiar places, and famous names in history, which players use to build sentences -- challenging their ingenuity and salesmanship. “The best part about the game,” says McNeill “is justifying your sentences to the other players who have the power of a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down.’ Try to imagine the words ‘doghouse,’ ‘Charles Dickens,’ and ‘worms’ in one sentence -- you get the idea.”

You’ve been Sentenced! release has elicited rave reviews from groups as diverse as the Mensa Society (Toy Roundup, June 2006), to The Old Schoolhouse Magazine for homeschooling parents, to Metro Kids Magazine. Game reviewer Tom Vasel of thedicetower.com says, “I could recommend the game because it has a unique box structure, or because it comes with more cards than any other game that I've ever seen. I could recommend it because it can be used with English classes or folks wanting to increase their language skills. I could recommend it because it can handle up to ten players fairly easily. But I won't -- I'll simply recommend it because it's fun.”

You’ve been Sentenced! was selected at the recent FAO Schwarz Toy Auditions which were held at the FAO Schwarz flagship store. “I believe that the secret to the games success and the amazing response we’ve received is that You’ve been Sentenced! is appealing to such a wide age range. But the most surprising thing to me is that teachers and educators from around the country have begun utilizing the game in classrooms. It provides the opportunity to instruct in grammar, word usage, and sentence construction, in a really fun way – the kids don’t even realize how much they’re learning.”

“‘It's awesome!’ That was a comment from one of my most difficult to please 5th grade students,” says veteran teacher Rebecca Brown of the Garnet Valley School District in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania. “It was a great way to get them to think creatively and originally. The game also lends itself to discussions on grammar and word usage.”

The creators of You’ve been Sentenced! are McNeill Designs for Brighter Minds is a 30+ person creative team which produces games and toys of all kinds. The company’s recent releases include award-winning games You’ve been Sentenced! a language game where players use word cards to build sentences, challenging their ingenuity in a hilarious, competitive environment, and Twisted Fish a challenging memory game which requires strategy, deception, and bluffing skills, plus an intact sense of humor.

In addition to card and board games, McNeill Designs has rapidly expanded and diversified. McNeill Designs products have been featured in national publications such as the home schooling magazine The Old Schoolhouse, the highbrow language enthusiasts’ publication Verbatim, and on television for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

In addition to card and board games, McNeill Designs has rapidly expanded and diversified. In 2006, McNeill Designs partnered with the production company Positive Promotions in the development of a television game show. As well, a division which produces electronic and online games was recently added.
